55 Dead as El Mencho's Death Sparks CJNG Retaliation in Mexico
Secretary of Security and Civilian Protection Omar Garcia Harfuch confirmed that 25 security officers were killed in cartel-orchestrated attacks following the operation that eliminated El Mencho, while 30 cartel members were neutralized during subsequent security operations. "They have already identified and confirmed him," Harfuch said, referencing the forensic and DNA analysis conducted by Mexico's Attorney General's Office that formally verified Oseguera's identity on Monday.
Highways Blockaded, Tourists Stranded
The fallout extended far beyond gunfire. Armed cartel members erected roadblocks on 85 highways spanning 11 states, paralyzing transport networks before authorities restored movement on major routes. In Guadalajara — a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — approximately 1,000 tourists were left stranded at the city's zoo. Authorities deployed dozens of buses and distributed food while working to evacuate visitors.
The resort city of Puerto Vallarta saw flights canceled and large-scale public events suspended, including a scheduled concert by US singer Kali Uchis. The unrest cast a shadow over western Mexico's tourism sector at the height of the travel season.
A Decade-Long Manhunt Ends
El Mencho's death closes one of the longest and most costly manhunts in North American law enforcement history. In May 2016, the US State Department formally placed him on its most-wanted list. A federal court in the Western District of Texas sought him on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering.
The bounty on his head grew steadily with the threat he posed — Mexico's Attorney General's Office offered roughly $1.5 million for information leading to his capture in August 2018, a figure the US eclipsed in December 2024 with a $15 million reward.
His body was transferred under heavy security escort to a forensic facility in Mexico City, as authorities braced for further unrest across a nation still reeling from the violent shockwave his death has unleashed.
